I recently did an ABC radio interview where I talked about what scared us into leaving Italy, you can listen to it here and avoid making the same mistakes as us: http://upsticksandgo.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Up-Sticks-and-Go-ABC-return-home-interview.mp3 Love to hear your stories of returning home unexpectedly – how do you decide its time to cut your losses and move on? It sure was a difficult decision for us to make at the time, but we listened to what the universe was saying to us and once we made the decision to come home the stress we were feeling dropped away, as if proof that we’d made the right choice...

Back in Tassie

Back in Tassie

After having 2 car crashes in Italy we had to come back to Tassie because mum and dad got quite stressed.  So we booked tickets For the flights. And left about 3 days later. On the first flight I watched 1 movie and played a few games. On the second flight which went for 13 hours I watched a few movies then I went to sleep for like 30 mins and I then I got up and played some games and watched some more movies.  After that I went back to sleep again, for about 30 mins -> so for the next 9 hours I just kept watching movies then playing games and then falling back to sleep. But when it finely finished we got of the plane and the next thing we realised was that we were so close to Tassie!  It was just 1 hour away BUT we had to wait a whole 11 hours in the airport!!!  I mean, like we had just survived a whole 13 hour flight. So, I’m just like dead sleeping on the floor in the airport – I managed another 30 min sleep.  When I woke up I was still just so tired – we booked our bags into the next flight.  Then we met up with my Aunty and had lunch with her which was nice.  After she went back to work we found somewhere to sit down for the next 4 hours! When we got on the plane we went up then down and we were in Tassie – yay.  We met some of our family at the airport and said hi and stuff.  They drove us to Nans and we fell asleep and when we woke up we looked at the time and I was like what!!! Cause it was 1:00…. Wait for it….. Pm!! Lot more stuff happened and then we went down to the shack and that’s were I am now – at the beach...

So recently we decided to come home back to Australia to see our family and friends and settle down for a while, which is what we are doing right now in a beach shack at Greens Beach, where it is also turning into summer, so it will be nice and warm – great for swimming and great for relaxing! After a long trip back home from Italy to Abu Dhabi in 6 hours and waiting there for 4 hours then taking a 13 hour flight to Melbourne and then waiting there 11 hours then 1 hour flight down to Launceston – we were very tired. But it feels great to be back in Tassie near my friends and family and everything I know. We have our dog Tiger back – he’s great and its almost like we didn’t go away – we’re playing ball with him and taking him for lots of walks on the beach! Hope you guys enjoyed this weeks blog see you...

Things can change on a dime

Things can change on a dime

We’re sitting in a transit lounge in the Abu Dhabi airport while the kids catchup up on some sleep – on the floor at our feet… Just a week ago we had no intention of heading back to Australia until June 2016 and yet here we are almost half way home.. Wow, things can change quickly! Why have we changed our plans, well thats a little complicated – it wasn’t just one thing but a combination of things which have us traveling back to Australia 8 months early! In the last week Simon and I had a car accident each – neither of us has had an accident in 10 – 15 years.  Simons was a very minor accident that was rapidly escalating into a big argument with the owner of the other car who was trying to extort a couple of thousand out of us.  Where as my accident was a little more serious with a young lady speeding through an intersection where she should have stopped.  The result was her car being rather messed up and ours with only minor damage.  She was also 3 months pregnant which complicated matters. As foreign drivers we found it very difficult to purchase anything but third party insurance, and this left us feeling rather vulnerable.  We did a lot of research and talked with a lawyer to get advise but no one could tell us exactly what to expect – there were just too many unknowns.  So now we had two accidents to resolve but no clear path to do so and our stress levels were at an unhealthy level – finally we felt the universe was definitely trying to tell us something! It’s funny, when you decide to drive on Italian roads people tell you to watch out for the Italian drivers, which we took with a gain of salt.  But after 10 weeks on the roads in Italy I would have to say they are rather dangerous.  Certainly after our accidents we were hyper aware of their speed, erratic maneuvers, interesting parking solutions and general irresponsible road behaviour.  We’ve been on roads in many parts of the world but Italian drivers are one of a kind. While I’m writing...

Learning Italian

Learning Italian

We’ve been in Italy for about 6 weeks now and about 2 weeks ago we thought it was about time we started to learn the Italian language!  As Australians learning another language has not been high on our list of priories – at school Simon and I did a little French but thats about it.  I wonder if it is because Australia is so far from any other countries that we don’t spend the time to learn other languages.  We know that our children were not exposed to very many foreign languages at school either.  At the most they might have a term of Indonesian and then in High School language becomes elective – if the specialist teachers are available!  This has at least been our experience of LOTE (languages Other Than English) in Australia. So we have a lovely Italian language tutor (Ilaria) coming to our house twice a week to teach us Italian as a family, for an hour and a half at a time.  As expected the kids malleable brains are picking it up much faster than the adults!  Tash has also started singing lessons and the boys are doing basketball, both of which means that they are exposed on a regular basis to Italian in situations where they have to try to understand whats going on 🙂 Simon and I muddle along trying to use Google Translate (which is not the best for a few reasons), plus we try to remember what our teacher told us to say in particular situations – and then we need to decide if particular words are masculine or feminine, which can change the word you use…  The one big and glaring thing that we have all noticed is that in Australia we are not taught grammar any where near as thoroughly as they are here in Europe!  In fact it has been quite embarrassing to have our tutor talk about propositions, articles and conjunctions when we didn’t fully understand them!  Tash even said she felt she’s learnt more about grammar in the last couple of Italian lessons than all her English classes in Australia… What this has demonstrated to me is that to learn other languages well, it is...
